How Female DJs and Producers Narrowed the Gender Gap in Electronic Dance Music: Strategies and Campaign that have been Successful in the Last Decade

A voice is missing from the electronic dance music (EDM) industry: whether in prominent festival line-ups like Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival, or press that features achievements of top stars, women are underrepresented. Indeed, EDM industry has long been male-dominated permeated with gender imbalance. Only until last decade did gap begin to close: since 2012, investigations examining ratio female artist participation at festivals have reported an ascending trend producers/DJs. Through analyses past interviews musicians other sources documentation shed light on their experiences, this research investigates possible factors contributed imbalance industry, as well strategies producers/DJs developed work against disadvantages. Hopefully, through exploring ways worked overcome barriers, casts real solutions address discrimination sexism thereby help make industries pronounced more diverse.
